Located in historic downtown New Iberia, Louisiana, The Gouguenheim blends a unique elegance and nostalgia that insures a special occasion memorable. In 1894 this building was the Washington Ballroom, which was used for dancing, meetings and wedding receptions. That year Charles Gouguenheim purchased the building and opened the Gouguenheim Store, selling men’s and women’s apparel as well as dry goods, hardware, and other items needed by local farmers and commercial fishermen. The second floor of the building was occupied by The Elks Lodge. A sign at their entrance B.P.O.E meaning, Benevolent Protective Order of Elk was also translated by locals to be as the Best People on Earth. A fire in 1899 destroyed much of downtown New Iberia. The Gouguenheim building actually helped to stop the fire¹s westward progress due to its stucco wallsand metal roof.

In 1905 a one room structure was built in the rear of the building. This became the site of the second public school in New Iberia. The teacher, Miss Mollie Hartman, was the only teacher in the entire Iberia Parish school system. This is where the two-car parking is today. The Gouguenheim Store closed it doors around 1917 due to Mr. Gouguenheim’s failing health. The Elks Lodge remained open on the second floor. From 1919-1930 the first floor was the Hugumin Bar and Billiard Parlor.

Morgan & Lindsey five and dime Store opened in 1933 utilizing both floors of the building. It was at this time that the second floor balcony was removed and an elevator was installed in the rear of the building. The store operated for more than 30 years closing in 1964. The building remained empty until it was purchased in 1972 by Herman Gesser, Jr. and was used as office space and a Hallmark store.

Local entrepreneurs, Christopher and Becky Jordan, purchased the building in 2000 and restored it to its present beauty. The balcony, influenced by the original building design, was added. Some of the cypress removed during the renovations was reused as moldings, fireplace mantles, and cabinets throughout the building.
